Food & Water Bowls

Some of the things I am going to share are just things I like after trial and error. I have found that certain products work much better than others. For food bowls, I love the elevated, tipped. They seem to work so much better than traditional bowls. These are the ones I use, Chewy.com

For water, I love a good fountain. Again, cats and kittens may have health issues if they do not get enough water, and fountains just seem to get their attention. The filter keeps the water very clean and removes some things that may be harmful, like chlorine and other chemicals used in town and city water. The tricky part is getting the cord hidden or covered so there is no chewing. They do make wireless, and they are quite nice. Things to remember: is it easy to clean, heavy enough not to be knocked around and spilled, and how hard is it to find the filters?

High Quality Dry Kitten Food

Food is one of the biggest issues in the health and well-being of your new baby. Please know there is a lot of “junk” being sold; it would be like feeding your children sawdust and Coco Puffs every day and expecting them to grow and be healthy. Cats are much different than dogs when it comes to sharing their discomfort. Cats may be very ill and seem fine.
At this moment, we are feeding ORIJEN Free Run Chicken & Turkey, & Wild Caught Salmon & Herring Grain-Free Dry Kitten Food. You may find this at a local pet store or at Chewy.com

We feed dry food for the day and canned food for breakfast and dinner. With cats and kittens, moisture is a big deal, and canned food is a great way to add a bit of water and keep them hydrated.

You may notice that both dry and wet are Grain-Free. There is a lot of controversy surrounding being grain-free. Believe me when I tell you, I have spent hours researching dog and cat foods. This is why we mix several dry to keep things healthy and interesting here. We mix the above Kitten food with Orijen Original Dry Cat Food and Acana Meadowlands. You may find this at your local pet store or at Chewy.com

***If you decide not to feed what we are feeding here, PLEASE let me know, and on the day of pick-up, we will send you home two weeks’ worth of food. The first week, you feed only what we send with you. In the second week, you will mix half our food and your new food and finish the bag before moving on to your new food. This is so important as stress can bring on many issues for a kitten. It could be diarrhea or could show itself as an upper respiratory issue. Kittens are far more fragile in this manner than puppies regarding stress. Going home is stressful enough without making changes.

I will also tell you that I have been highly satisfied for 10-plus years. I have fed and LOVED Orijen and Acana products to my breeding animals, dogs, and cats. In the past year, Champion Pet Foods, manufacturer of Orijen and Acana, sold out to Mars Incorporated. I have been watching the quality and ingredient labels for changes. That is why I may be finding a replacement in the next few months. For those concerned about good health, please watch the website as I post changes. Orijen and Acana are still a big step ahead of others, but I strive for the BEST!

Treats

Unlike Food, I think a treat should be a treat. If you’re feeding high-quality food, then I think a little “junk” is okay in moderation. There are also many high-quality treats. I, myself, prefer a Snickers Bar as a treat rather than Broccoli!!

Veterinarians Appointments

Our contract requires that a licensed veterinarian see your new baby within ten days of the pick-up date. This is a Maine State Law, and we are state-licensed. This ensures that the laws of the Sale of Dogs & Cats in Maine cover you.
Another part of the veterinary visit is to discuss future needs, and we recommend that your new baby be on a Flea & Tick and Heartworm Preventative.

We know that your new baby is an Indoor Cat Only, but there are many ways fleas, ticks, and mosquitos can get their way into the house, and we all know the damage and disease they carry.

Litter Box & Litter

Here we use Arm & Hammer Clump and Seal MultiCat for our litter. I have used others and find that I like this one the best and with Chewy.com, it can be delivered to your door. Even if you decide to use a different litter, using what we use for the first month would be beneficial in keeping stress at a minimum.
We did use Pretty Litter until it was brought to my attention that several cats had health issues from ingesting it, and I did not care for the way it tracked out of the litter box.

Litter Boxes are the sky’s the limit. Here we don’t have tops on, but that shouldn’t be a problem. They make so many now, end tables and robots or traditional. Whatever works for your lifestyle and décor.

Scratching Post and/or Cat Tree

Every cat’s instinct to scratch can be a home decorator’s nightmare, but not with the right scratching post or cat tree. I prefer those with a stable base, satisfying texture, and durability. They provide a designated spot for your cat to stretch, scratch, and climb without compromising your furniture. Look for options on Chewy.com with integrated lounging platforms – they’re a hit with my feline friends!

Cat Bed

When it comes to cat beds, comfort is king. I’ve discovered that beds with a soft, plush texture and raised edges are cat magnets. They offer a sense of security and a cozy nestling spot. Plus, they should be easy to wash, since cleanliness is paramount. You’ll find an array of comfy, washable beds on Chewy.com that promise sweet dreams for your kitty.

Toys

Meow! I wanted to share a special gift from me to your kitties! If you sign up for KitNipBox with this link, Kitnipbox.com
you’ll get 15% off your first box. I am a subscriber and love it!

Crate for Transport

Safety and comfort during transport are non-negotiable. I recommend a sturdy crate with ample ventilation and soft bedding inside. It should be secure yet convenient to carry. Whether a vet visit or a longer journey, a good crate ensures your cat’s travels are stress-free. Look for one that’s easy to assemble and clean and has a reputation for reliability.

Brushes and/or Combs

This is a link to the best article I have found about the proper comb and brushes to use. Honestly, I love the comb, and I don’t use a brush.

Nail Clippers

The nail clippers I use are on this link, and I love them. If you start out using these as a kitten, you will have no problem with your adult cat.

Bathing

In general, cats do not need a bath and always remember how unnatural it is to have a foreign substance on their fur.

When people put dry shampoo or wipes on their cats or bathe them and don’t rinse them entirely, they’re asking their cat to lick shampoo off their coat. Remember, anything you put on their skin/fur will likely end up on their tongue, so something like a waterless shampoo or conditioner can be unpleasant and unnatural for a cat.

Of course, it is sometimes necessary to bathe our pets; in that case, here are some safe and recommended shampoos for cats.
